What is Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) and how to get started with PoC?

Feb 13th 2024

As the Push-to-talk over cellular market continues to grow, we are here to explain what exactly it is and how you can migrate from using two-way radios to smartphone devices that offer PoC.

Let us define Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) – PoC is a communication service that enables instant voice communication over cellular networks. It is often referred to as PTT or PoC. PTT originated as a feature on two-way radios, allowing users to transmit voice messages by pressing a button while other users on the same frequency could hear the message.

With the advent of cellular networks and smartphones, the concept of PTT was extended to work over cellular data connections. Instead of relying on traditional radio frequencies, PoC utilizes the existing infrastructure of cellular networks to facilitate communication. It enables individuals or groups to communicate instantly with the push of a button, much like using a walkie-talkie.

Today, many device manufacturers, like Sonim, Samsung, Kyocera, and CAT, are on board with this concept and have built-in a push-to-talk button on the side of their smartphones, like a walkie-talk.

PTT Over Cellular Communication Device

Push-to-talk over cellular is not quite an all-in-one solution, it utilizes a variety of products to have the best PoC experience. The first step is to choose a smartphone device that has a built-in push-to-talk button. Here is a list of device manufactures: Samsung, Sonim, CAT, Kyocera, and more.

Then download a push-to-talk (PTT) application that turns the device into a global walkie-talkie using cellular networks. Here is a list of PTT applications: Microsoft Teams Walkie Talkie, Zello, ESChat, Kodiak, TASSTA, Orion, and more.

Once you have chosen the device and PTT application that best fit your business needs, you can accessorize. Klein Electronics designs PoC audio accessories such as multi chargers, cases, headsets, earpieces and RSMs. Our audio accessories are specifically designed to accommodate the push-to-talk feature, this is done using microcontrollers on the PCB of the accessory. Here is a list of our popular push-to-talk earpieces:

Each of our headsets requires firmware specific to the device, as well as the application, in order to activate the device to trigger the application, and perform the function of PTT clearly, and without latency. At Klein, we currently offer an extensive line of audio accessories that are built with the same quality and rugged durability that our two-way radio users have relied on for 30 years. We translated this product scope into what are now “smart” accessories, able to work in tandem with these devices and applications perfectly, and in unison as an OEM.
